Bio Sketch and CV

Joep Konings is Professor and Dean of the Graduate School of Business at Nazarbayev University. He holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. His research focuses on International Finance, Firm dynamism and Globalization. To this end, he makes use of ‘big data’ to answer pressing economic questions, resulting in publications in the leading academic journals, such as the Quarterly Journal of Economics, The American Economic Review and The Review of Economic Studies.

Prior to joining Nazarbayev University, Konings was a full professor at the University of Liverpool Management School and at KU Leuven. He held various visiting positions at other universities and international organizations, such as Dartmouth College, the International Monetary Fund and the New York Fed. During the financial crisis he was an economic adviser of the Bureau of European Policy Advisers, at the office of President Barroso of the European Commission. Konings is a research fellow of the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), London, a fellow of the Royal Flemish Academy for Sciences and Arts and an expert adviser to the Belgian National Productivity Council.
